“Kashmir Is India’s Internal Matter”; Taliban Refuses To Support Pakistan

After article 370 was abrogated in Kashmir in August last year, the Taliban had denied any link between the Kashmir and Afghan issue.

Mumbai| In a tweet on Monday, the Taliban clarified that it does not support Pakistan in its ‘Holy War’ against India. It also said that Kashmir is India’s internal matter. The clarification was provided after some fake tweets were being circulated, in which Taliban spokespersons Suhail Shaheen and Zabiullah Mujahid were attributed saying friendship between Islamic Emirate and India was not possible.

“The statement that has been circulated in certain media regarding India does not belong to Islamic emirate. The policy of Islamic Emirate regarding neighbour states is very obvious that we don’t interfere in the domestic issues of them,” a tweet from Shaheen clarified.

Earlier, in an interview, Shaheen had also said that India could play a crucial role in peacemaking in Afghanistan. After article 370 was abrogated in Kashmir in August last year, the Taliban had denied any link between the Kashmir and Afghan issue.

The statement by the group was seen by many experts as an attempt to approach the Kashmir issue in a more sober and balanced way than its earlier stand. It was said to be a move made to change the image of the Taliban, which has been of a pawn of Pakistan.

Hindustan Times reported the diplomats based in Kabul and Delhi told the newspaper that the clarification from the Taliban came after India worked the backchannels to confirm reports about the group’s approach to India and on Jammu and Kashmir.

New Delhi was informed that the social media posts were fake and did not reflect the Taliban’s stand on the issue.
