Pakistan: Sikh girl abducted in Nankana Sahib; family alleges forceful conversion to Islam

The matter came to light when a video of the abducted Sikh girl from Pakistan’s Nankana Sahib surfaced in which she was seen marrying a Muslim boy.

 

Islamabad| Pakistan’s record on hostilities towards the minorities and forceful conversion of girls from minority religions into Islam has remained poor over the years. The abduction and forceful conversion of young girls from minority religion has also remained a major Human Rights issue in the country.

One such fresh incident has come to light where a Sikh girl was abducted from Pakistan’s Nankana Sahib. Reportedly, the girl was missing for three days. After three days a video surfaced, in which she was seen converting to Islam and marrying a Muslim boy. The family which was protesting against the abduction said that she was forcefully converted to Islam.

The girl’s brothers and father released a video asking for help from Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan. Her brother said, “My sister was abducted and she was threatened that if she does not convert to Islam then her brothers and father would be shot dead.” “I appeal to Imran Khan and Army chief Qamar Jawed Bajwa to help us bring her back,” he added.

The issue invoked a strong reaction from India as well. SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal expressed his concern over the abduction and forcefully conversion of a Sikh Girl in Pakistan. He condemned Pakistan for not providing safety and security to the minorities living in Pakistan.

On the other hand, Punjab Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh has also tweeted about the issue. He has urged India’s external affairs minister Dr S jaishankar to take up this matter with his Pakistani counterpart. He also requested Imran Khan to take firm and immediate action against the perpetrators.

Meanwhile, MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar when asked about the incident said that India has taken up the issue several times. “We have talked of harassment, violence, forced abduction, forced conversion, persecution of minorities. I feel that the minorities who are there, they have some obligations, which Pakistan should fulfil,” he said.
