Protests Erupt In Minneapolis After A Man Dies In Police Custody

Minneapolis| Massive crowds gathered on Tuesday to protest at the same site where a man named George Floyd was violently arrested a day earlier. A police officer kneeled on his neck and didn’t let up for almost 7 minutes, despite the man pleading that he couldn’t breathe. Floyd died hours later.

Hundreds of protestors gathered at 3700 block of Chicago Avenue, where Floyd was arrested for suspicion of forgery outside a deli. After George Floyd was taken into custody, the 46-year-old was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he was declared dead, CBS Minnesota reported.

Four officers have been fired for their role in this incident.

The protestors marched from the site of the arrest to Minneapolis Police’s 3rd Precinct building. Meanwhile, officers dressed in riot gears could be seen creating a barrier around the precinct, using smoke bombs or tear gas, as well as flash grenades, CBS Minnesota reported.

Along with many videos of peaceful protestors, some of the videos posted on Twitter also show protesters throwing bricks and rocks at police cars, and smashing windows. According to CBS Minnesota, at least one officer has been injured.

Though he hasn’t commented anything after the protests erupted, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said earlier in the day that what happened to Floyd is “horrible,” and “completely and utterly messed up.”

“Being black in America should not be a death sentence. This man’s life matters. He matters. … I believe what I saw and what I saw is wrong on every level,” He posted on Twitter.
