Russian PM Mikhail Self Isolates After Testing Positive for Coronavirus

Mikhail Mishustin told President Vladimir Putin that he had been tested positive for COVID-19 and was briefly stepping down to recover.

Moscow| Mikhail Mishustin, Russian PM says he has tested positive for the COVID-19 and has informed President Vladimir Putin that he will self-isolate.

Andrei Belousov, First Deputy Prime Minister will temporarily perform Mishustin’s duties, but the prime minister said that he would stay in touch on important issues.

Mishustin, 54, was named prime minister in January.

Putin voiced hope during a video call, that Mishustin would continue taking part in outlining policies to revive the Russian economy, which has been plunged by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The prime minister, in Russia, oversees the economy and reports to the president.

It was not immediately clear when President Vladimir Putin last met with PM Mikhail Mishustin in person. The Russian president has decreased meetings and switched to holding video conferences with administrators during the pandemic.

Russia’s national tally of confirmed COVID-19 cases swelled past the 100,000-mark earlier on Thursday after a record daily rise in new infections.

Russia is the world’s largest nation by territory and has been on lockdown since Putin declared the closing of most public spaces in late March to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Globally, the total number of COVID-19 cases neared 3,200,000 while the death toll crossed 233,000, as per the latest data from Johns Hopkins University.
