Tamil Nadu To Send 4 Lawmakers, Officials To Ukraine For Evacuation Operation

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has decided to send legislators to the neighboring countries of Ukraine, for evacuating the stranded students. With this initiative, Tamil Nadu will become the first State to get involved in the evacuation operations. 

Two Rajya Sabha MPs, Tiruchi Siva and MM Abdullah, one Lok Sabha MP Kalanidhi Veerasamy and MLA TRB Raja will be heading to the Hungary, Romania, Poland and Slovakia for evacuating the students. Four senior IAS officers will accompany the DMK lawmakers.

Chief Minister MK Stalin’s office has tweeted that MK Stalin inspected the steps being taken to rescue Tamil Nadu students stranded in Ukraine.

“It is the responsibility of the Indian Government to safeguard the life of every Indian passport holder. @PMOIndia should reign in their Ministers from issuing unwarranted statements and put in their efforts for evacuating every Indian safely,” tweeted MK Stalin on Wednesday.

Earlier on February 28, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting, as the Ukraine-Russia crisis continues to escalate. This is the second high-level meeting in the last 24 hours chaired by the Prime Minister on the issue that has caught global attention. The government has also decided to send Union ministers Hardeep Singh Puri, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Kiren Rijiju and General VK Singh to travel to Ukraine’s neighboring countries amid evacuation efforts.

Jyotiraditya Scindia is in charge of Romania and Moldova; Kiren Rijiju in Slovakia; Hardeep Puri in Hungary and VK Singh at Poland.

The ministers are greeting the students returned from the war-torn country, by chanting “Bharat Mata ki Jai” and giving them flowers.

Hundreds of Indians are stuck at the border of Ukraine, are emerging on the social media.

Videos of students’ SOS are shared by the opposition parties and they have have urged the government to take urgent measures to evacuate students out of Ukraine.

Many students who headed to the border on foot, in sub-zero temperatures, alleged that they were unable to cross over and had received hardly any help from officials.
