Kolkata: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra condemned the alleged rape and murder of Bengal teen. She assured the family that the “full extent of the law will be implemented” to punish the culprits. Her serious remarks came after her party’s chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee blamed the victim, and questioned questioned: “Was she raped? Was she pregnant or had a love affair?”
Moitra said, that parents of the girl are still in shock. “There is no word to describe the horrible incident. Parents are still in shock. I have assured the family that the full extent of the law would be implemented to bring the perpetrators to justice.”
She was at girl’s village and met her family in Nadia district.
She praising police said that they have done a great job. She also lauded them for “showing promptness to arrest the accused”.
On the issue she had a completely opposite stand from her party’s chief. Moitra said it does not matter if the girl was in a relationship with the accused. “The boy is an adult and if he has had a sexual relationship with a minor, then that is rape according to the law and he will be prosecuted accordingly,” she said. Incidentally, the accused is the son of a local TMC leader.
When she was questioned that the political connections of accused’s father in ruling party might become a blockage in driving justice, Moitra said the party will take every step to punish the accused. “There is no way he will be shielded,” she said.
A minor girl died after she was allegedly gang-raped at a birthday party in West Bengal’s Nadia district, police said on Sunday. The girl’s family has alleged that the main accused is son of a TMC leader.
The victim’s family alleged that the body was cremated without an autopsy under pressure from a local TMC panchayat leader, whose son Braj Gopal Goala (21) is the prime accused in the case. A police complaint was lodged five days after the incident on April 10.
