Bangalore: The Bangalore police chief today announced a ban on protests and agitations for and against the “strict implementation of the schools/colleges uniform rules” which has been extended by two weeks. The ban on the protests within the 200-meter radius of college schools and other educational institutions had been imposed from February 9.
The ban order said that at some places public peace and order were disturbed amid protests. Hence proper security measures were necessary.
“Since the issue is still alive and the possibility of holding protests, for and against the same in Bengaluru city cannot be ruled out, it is considered appropriate to extend the aforementioned prohibitory order,” the fresh order issued today said.
The Dakshina Kannada district administration in Karnataka, two days ago also extended the prohibitory orders which are currently placed at the schools and colleges of the district till February 26.
The hijab row has escalated many incidents of stone-pelting and many young Muslim women being harassed by saffron scarf students, made the headlines.
The protests in the state started late last year when school students were prevented from wearing the headscarf. It has since sparked protests and counter-demonstrations involving saffron scarves that have spread to other states as well.
To bring the situation under control and to calm the situation, Karnataka’s state government had temporarily closed schools but they have gradually opened since.
The interim order by the Karnataka High Court has asked to resume educational institutions and has imposed a ban on wearing of all the religious symbols in schools while it considers the headscarf ban.
