“Data On Crimes Against Individual Communities Not Kept Centrally”: Minister Of State For Home Affairs

New Delhi: Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, speaking at Lok Sabha said that specific data regarding crimes against individual communities is centrally not maintained. The minister said so while replying to a question on crimes against Christians by MP Vincent H Pala.

The minister had asked whether there was a more than 95% increase in religious crimes according to the 2020 National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report.

On being asked what measures the Centre had taken, the Minister said, “Public order and police are State subjects as per the Seventh Schedule to the Constitution. The responsibility to maintain law and order primarily rests with the respective state governments.”

Rai further added that the government of India monitors the internal security and law and order situation in the country. For maintaining peace and tranquillity, advisories are being issued from time to time.

On being requested, the government also deploys Central Armed Police Forces to aid and assist the State government. Further to strengthening the law and order machinery, a central scheme for modernization of State Police forces has been implemented by the government and has an institutionalized mechanism for sharing intelligence for effective maintenance of public order.

In this regard, it can be mentioned that NCRB collates data relating to crimes as supplied by the state and Union Territories. However, specific data regarding crimes against individual communities are not maintained centrally.
