ED Raids Punjab CM’s Nephew In Mining Case Ahead Of Elections

Chandigarh: Enforcement Directorate in connection with sand mining, has raided Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s nephew Bhupinder Singh Honey. Bhupinder Singh Honey’s home and 10 other places in Punjab were searched early this morning.

A money laundering case has been filed by the Enforcement Directorate, against Bhupinder. The Enforcement Directorate is investigating several people with political links, officials said.

Quoting officials, news agency IANS reported that raids were also conducted at the premises of the sand mafia and Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s nephew’s Bhupinder Singh Honey. During the raids, officials said that the ED recorded the statement of those who were present at the house of Honey.

The raids came up in the middle of intense campaigning in Punjab. Punjab Polls will now be held on February 20. The counting of voting will start from March 10.

In the Punjab campaign, illegal sand mining has been one of the talking points. The ruling Congress has been accused by its former Chief Minister, Amarinder Singh, of links to the trade. Amarinder Singh, who quit the Congress after being sacked as Chief Minister in September, alleges that all Congress MLAs are involved in the illegal trade of sand.

“If I start telling names I will have to start from the top,” he had said last month.

Speaking with the reporters Singh had aid that he alerted Congress President Sonia Gandhi about MLAs involved.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has emerged as a strong challenge to the Congress in Punjab, has also targeted Chief Minister Channi over allegations of illegal sand mining in his constituency.
