Kolkata: Trinamool Congress MP Sougata Roy has said even a single crime against women in Bengal is shameful when the Chief Minister herself is a woman.
“Everyone is extremely worried about crime against women and I am not sure if it is due to the media. We must have zero tolerance in these matters. If any incident takes place, the strictest action must be taken. In a state where we have a woman as the Chief Minister, even one such crime under her leadership is quite shameful for all of us. I hope the police and administration will be mindful of that fact.”
The statement by the TMC MP came soon after the alleged rape of a minor girl in Bengal’s Nadia district continue to raise questions.
Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier, drew sharp criticism from several quarters when in one statement she appeared to have questioned the allegations of rape.
She said, “This story they are showing that a minor has died due to rape, Will you call it rape? Was she pregnant or had a love affair? Have they enquired? I have asked the police. They have made arrests. I was told the girl had an affair with the boy.”
Mamata Banerjee said, “It was a love affair and that’s confirmed as the family was aware of it. If a couple is in a relationship, can I stop it? This is not UP, we don’t do Love Jihad here. This is their personal freedom. But if there are any misdeeds, police will arrest the culprits. One suspect has been arrested already.”
