I Will Live Here, I Will Die Here: Sidhu Moose Wala

“I am not going anywhere. I will live here and I will die here,” Sidhu Moose Wala would tell voters during the Punjab polls campaign in February. Born on June 17, 1993, in Moose Wala village in Punjab’s Mansa district. Sidhu Moose Wala’s father, Balkar Singh, is an ex-army man, and his mother, Charan Kaur, is a sarpanch.

The 28-year-old held a degree in electrical engineering, and his inclination towards music grew in college. He later moved to Canada.

His songs attracted controversy as they openly promoted gun culture and glorified gangsters. His song ‘Jatti Jeonay Morh Di Bandook Wargi,’ which was released in September 2019, sparked massive outrage due to a reference to the 18th-century Sikh warrior Mai Bhago. He was accused of portraying the Sikh warrior in a negative light. Moose Wala later apologized.

His song  ‘Sanju’, also landed into controversy in July 2020. The song was released after Sidhu Moose Wala got bail in the AK-47 shooting case. In the song released on social media, he compared himself with actor Sanjay Dutt. A case was also filed against him under the Arms Act after a video clip of him practicing at a firing range in Barnala village went viral on social media in May 2020. However, he was later granted bail by a Sangrur court.

Sidhu Moose Wala contested the Punjab assembly elections from the Mansa constituency in 2022. He was a Congress candidate and was defeated by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Dr. Vijay Singla former health minister, who was arrested last week on corruption charges, by a margin of 63,323 votes.

His security was withdrawn on Saturday by the Punjab government along with 424 others, he was shot dead on Sunday evening.
