Mumbai Court Gives Bail To Rana Couple In Sedition Case

Mumbai: The Mumbai Sessions Court granted bail to Independent MP Navneet Rana and her MLA husband Ravi Rana. They are allowed to be released on bail by the sessions court on a few conditions.

Navneet Rana, an independent Lok Sabha member, and her MLA husband, Ravi Rana, were detained on April 23. Ravi is an MLA from Badnera, while Navneet is a Lok Sabha MP from Amravati in eastern Maharashtra.

After announcing their intention to perform the ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ outside Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s private residence ‘Matoshree’ in suburban Bandra, the Rana couple was detained at their Mumbai home.

Following their detention, the couple petitioned the court for bail in connection with a sedition and fostering hatred FIR filed by the Mumbai Police.

The police charged the Rana couple with multiple IPC violations, and the Khar Court sentenced them to 14 days in judicial detention.

The MP-MLA couple’s petition to nullify the second of two FIRs filed against them for resisting arrest has been denied by the Bombay High Court.

Navneet Rana was allegedly harassed, humiliated, subjected to casteist remarks, and even denied water or permission to use the restroom by the police, according to the couple and Leader of the Opposition Devendra Fadnavis.

The couple had labelled Uddhav Thackeray as a ‘Shani’ (Saturn) for Maharashtra who had forgotten his ‘Hindutva’ ideals.

Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a notice to the Ranas for “illegal building” at their home in Mumbai’s Khar neighbourhood.

“I hereby give you notice that, I shall, on the day 04/05/2022 thereafter anytime pursuant to provision of the last named section, enter with assistants or workmen into or upon the premises no. ,8th floor, Lavie, plot No-412, CTS NO-E/249, 14th Road, Khar west, Mumbai-52… in order to inspect the said premises, taking photos and measurements,” a BMC official said in the notice.
