Internet Ban and Curfew now in Assam, Army on standby as protesters burn effigies of BJP leaders

Demonstrations were held in Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Jorhat in Assam. Thousands of protesters took to the streets to protest the bill.

 

Dibrugarh| As the debate on the Citizenship Amendment Bill goes on in the Rajya Sabha, fierce protests took place in Assam, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Arunachal and Meghalaya. Thousands of students marched towards the assembly in Assam. Police in Dibrugarh lathicharged the students. A bus was blown up during the demonstration in Dispur. In 10 districts of Assam, mobile and Internet ban for up to 24 hours has been put up in place. Internet ban was also imposed in Tripura. In the wake of the violent incidents, the army has been deployed in Tripura and has been placed on standby in Assam. The 30-day protest, led by the North East Student Organization (NESO), is supported by 30 students and left organizations.

There is a fear in the North East that as soon as the bill is implemented, the language, culture and identity of the country will be in danger. However, Amit Shah has made it clear in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha that the Center is committed to protecting the language, culture and identity of the states of the North East.

Demonstrator barges into the house of BJP MP

Demonstrations were held in Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Jorhat in Assam. Thousands of protesters took to the streets to protest the bill. The army marched in many parts of Assam. All the exams held today at Guwahati and Dibrugarh University were cancelled. Demonstrators also set fire on several highways in Assam. All Assam Student Union members in Guwahati entered the house of Lok Sabha MP Queen Ojha and burnt the effigy of the BJP leader. Black flags were also displayed outside Union Minister of State Himanta Biswa Sharma’s house. In Dibrugarh, the students took out a 10 km long “Dispur Chalo” march. They broke several barricades of the police.

North Frontier Railway cancelled many trains

The North Frontier Railway (NFR) said on Tuesday that about 14 trains had to be cancelled or changed due to the demonstrations.

Manipur will also now be covered under the Inner Line permit

President Ramnath Kovind on Wednesday signed an order bringing Manipur under the Inner Line Permit (ILP). Shah announced this while discussing the citizenship bill in the Lok Sabha. Manipur is the fourth state to implement ILP after Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram. Under it, outsiders in these states should be allowed to go, even if they are residents of other states of India. Nagaland has also included Dimapur district under ILP. On Wednesday, the state government issued its notification.
