MHA official clarifies “myths” about CAA-NRC, says those born before 1 July 1987 or whose parents born before the date are Indian Citizens

The MHA official said, “Indian citizens will not have to prove their inheritance from earlier documents like the 1971 birth certificate of parents or grandparents.”

 

New Delhi| Amidst fierce protests across the country over CAA, the Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday issued a statement. A senior official of the ministry said, “Those born in India before July 1, 1987, or whose parents were born before 1987 are legally Indian citizens. They do not have to worry because of the citizenship law 2019 or when the NRC is implemented across the country.”

 

Citizenship can be proved by birth date or place of birth

He said, “The citizenship of India can be proved by giving any documents related to the date of birth or place of birth or both. In the coming days, the MHA is working to simplify the process of proving citizenship. ”

The possibility to include several common documents in a list

The MHA official said, “Indian citizens will not have to prove their inheritance from earlier documents like the 1971 birth certificate of parents or grandparents. It is possible to include several common documents in a list so that it can be decided that no Indian citizen is inadvertently disturbed. ”

The case of Assam is different

According to the 2004 amendments to the citizenship law, people living in the rest of the country except those living in Assam whose parents are Indian nationals but not illegal immigrants will also be considered Indian citizens. In the case of Assam, 1971 has been made the base year for the identification of Indian citizens.
