Two killed in police firing in Mangalore during CAA protest

Strict action will be taken by holding groups admins responsible in case such messages are continued to be spread, police added

In Karnataka’s Mangalore, two protesters have been killed in police firing during protests on the Citizenship Amendment Act. The victims, Jaleel (49) and Nausea (23) had suffered bullet injuries when police opened fire to quell the violent agitation against a recent Act.

The incident took place as the protests turned violent with demonstrators hurling stones at police personnel leading to lathi-charge and firing. Mangalore Police Commissioner Dr. Harsha has confirmed the deaths.

“Tragic news in the city of Mangalore. Two people have died in police shooting and two are critically injured. The BJP is directly responsible for the breakdown of law and order. The comments and actions of the BJP government and its leaders are creating an unnecessary provocative environment,” Karnataka Congress leader Dinesh Gundu Rao tweeted.

Protesters hit the road, defying prohibitory orders under section 144 of the CrPC that bans assembly of more than four people.

Some of the agitators were holding placards which read withdraw CAA and NRCā€™ and CAA is against constitutionā€™.

With stones being hurled, police made a lathi-charge to disperse the protesters, police said.

Protesters wore helmets and seen hurling stones at policemen. Shops were shut and there was no traffic movement.

Security has been beefed up at the deputy commissionerā€™s office and other areas of Mangalore to avoid untoward incidents.

Section 144, which was imposed from Thursday morning, will be in force till December 21 at midnight. The quick reaction team has also been deployed in Mangalore, sources said.

Police officials are also monitoring the social media overspreading of rumors and demanding people and students to gather in large numbers to stage protests.

Strict action will be taken by holding groups admins responsible in case such messages are continued to be spread, police added.

Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said he instructed police to exercise restraint while handling agitations and alleged that Congress was behind the protests. To allay fears among the Muslims, CM said protecting their interests was the government’s responsibility. BS Yediyurappa held a meeting with senior police officials and reviewed security arrangements.

Protests were also observed at Hubballi, Kalaburagi, Hassan, Mysuru, and Ballary in Karnataka where police detained demonstrators for violation of prohibitory orders.

District authorities in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Kalaburagi, Mangaluru, Belagavi, Hubballi, Shivamogga, Hassan, Chikkamagaluru, and Chikkaballapura sensing deterioration of the law and order situation, earlier prohibitory orders under CrPc section 144 was imposed for the next three days starting from Thursday.
