“No Comment”: Navjot Singh Sidhu After Being Sentenced For 1 Year Jail Term In Road Rage Case

New Delhi: After being convicted to one year in prison in a three-decade-old road rage case by the Supreme Court of India on Thursday, Congress leader Navjot Singh Sindhu refused to comment.

When asked about the one-year sentence, Mr Sidhu told reporters, “No comments.”

On Thursday, the Supreme Court granted Mr Sidhu’s request for a review of his sentence, adding, “On the matter of punishment, we have granted a review application. In addition to the fine, we impose a one-year prison sentence for respondent Sidhu.”

In a telephonic conversation with The Indian Express, Narvedinder Singh Suyach, son of Gurnam Singh, who lost his life in the incident involving Sidhu, said, “We are grateful to God. It is after 34 years that our family has got justice. We are going to a gurdwara to thank the almighty.”

Narvedinder, who is the only surviving son of the deceased, said, “Everybody has seen how we have fought for justice. We lost our father but justice was denied to us. Finally, it has been delivered.”

On December 27, 1988, Mr Sidhu allegedly beat Gurnam Singh on his head, leading to his death.

Mr Sidhu opposed the plea seeking to enlarge the scope of the road rage case against him citing earlier order of the court which held that there was no evidence that the death of the victim was caused by a single blow in the road rage case.

Mr Sidhu’s submission came while replying to an application filed by family members of the victim seeking to enlarge the scope of notice in the review petition in a three-decade-old road rage case against him.

Mr Sidhu, responding to the application filed by the petitioner seeking to enlarge the scope of notice, submitted that the application was devoid of any merits and ought to be dismissed.
