Protests, Resignations Amid BJP Announced Manipur Candidates List

Guwahati: The supporters of Bhartiya Janta Party at Manipur seem to be unhappy with the BJP’s call for contesting Manipur Assembly Polls. They have burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi an Chief Minister N Biren Singh. They were seen sloganeering as protests erupted on Sunday after the party named candidates for next month’s elections, leaving many disappointed.

Party offices in many areas, were destroyed and damaged. Protestors had gathered at many areas, holding a placards. Security has been stepped up around the BJP headquarters in Imphal.

Amid the announcement, several leaders have resigned, tough the exact number remains unclear. According to the NDTV sources, many of the aggrieved leaders were those who were not selected to accommodate defectors from the Congress.

On Sunday BJP has announced that they will contest all the 60 seats in the Manipur assembly elections. They have released the list of candidates contesting elections. The tickets of Manipur are banged by at least 10 former Congress leaders among the 16 MLAs who have joined BJP.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh, will contest elections from the Heingang seat, from where he had won 2017 elections.

Another key minister in Manipur, Biswajit Singh, will contest from Thongju seat. Former national footballer Somatai Saiza will contest from Ukhrul.

The pre-poll surveys have predicted that BJP will win which might face a stiff challenge from the Congress, which will continue to be main opposition party in the Northeastern state.

In the year 2017, BJP had won 21 seats and allying with the smaller parties and independent MLAs, and had came to power. Manipur will be undergoing elections in two phases, on February 27 and on March 3.

The Manipur BJP has fielded only three women and one Muslim candidate. Former Manipur Congress chief who joined the BJP, Govindas Konthoujam, has also got a party ticket to contest the election.
