Coimbatore: Addressing a convocation event at Bharathiar university, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu’s higher education minister, K. Ponmudy, said that English is more valuable than Hindi as a language. He claimed that those who speak Hindi are engaged in menial jobs. He implied that those who speak Hindi are selling panipuri in the city.
He asserted that Tamil Nadu students are willing to learn any language and hence Hindi should be made optional and not compulsory.
Addressing the students at the event he promised implementation of beneficial aspects of the National Education Policy 2020. But he claimed that the state government was determined to only implement a two-language system.
Sharing the stage at the ceremony with Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi, he questioned why one should learn Hindi when English, an International language, is already being taught.
Ponmudy claimed that Tamil Nadu is at the forefront of the education system in India. He stated that Tamil students were ready to learn any language. However, Hindi should only be an optional language and not a compulsory one, said the minister.
He sarcastically expressed that English is more valuable than Hindi, Ponmudy claimed that Hindi speakers are doing menial jobs.
“They used to say that if you study Hindi, you’ll get jobs? Is it so! You can see in Coimbatore who are selling pani puri now? That was once upon a time. Now English is the international language,” stated Ponmudy.
