17 construction workers killed and 15 injured in a truck accident in Maharashtra

As many as 17 labourers were killed and 15 others were left injured when a speeding truck overturned in the district of Satara in Western Maharashtra in wee hours today, said the police.

The truck that is said to be carrying construction workers had come from Bijapur district in Karnataka, and was going to Pune when it had met with an accident at around 4:30 a.m. in the morning on the Mumbai-Bengaluru highway while passing across the district, which is around 250 kms away from the city of Mumbai, said Sandeep Patil, Superintendent of police of Satara.

The driver had clearly lost control over the wheels at the Khambatki Ghat, an area that is majorly known to be accident-prone. Consequently, the vehicle collided into a barricade and then upturned.

As many as 17 of the labourers died on the spot while 15 others sustained severe injuries.

On receiving the information, the Khandala police rushed towards the spot and took all the injured people to the nearest hospital.

The police, are trying to determine the core reason for the accident, said the official. The police said that they suspect that the accident happened since the driver could not concentrate properly as he had been driving constantly and was sleep deprived.

The bodies have been sent for autopsy and the procedure was identifying the deceased is on, added the police.
