31 Aircrafts of IAF reported to be involved in accidents in the last four years: Government

Subhash Bhamre, Minister of State for Defence stated in a written reply to a question that around ten accidents had occurred in the year 2014-15 while the number rose to six in the year 2015-16

A count of thirty-one aircrafts of the Indian Air Force (IAF) have been involved in accidents in the last four years, as so was informed by the government to the Lok Sabha.

Subhash Bhamre, Minister of State for Defence stated in a written reply to a question that around ten accidents had occurred in the year 2014-15 while the number rose to six in the year 2015-16 and this number surged to 10 in 2016-17. Whereas the number of accidents that occurred in the year 2017-18 was reported to be five.

Bhamre said, “ Every aircraft accident in the Indian Air Force is investigated by a Court of Inquiry (CoI) to ascertain the cause of accident.”

He said that replacing and to discontinue the use of such aircrafts will depend on the factors of strategic objectives, operational requisites of the defence forces and national security.

Moreover, Bhamre denied of receiving any proposal from any political experts for issuing a white paper on the Rafale fighter jet deal.

Answering a separate question, Bhamre stated that the government had approved the augmentation of rate of production of Light Combat Aircraft Tejas that is indigenously developed from 8 aircrafts yearly to 16 aircrafts.
