New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held the meeting of its parliamentary party at Dr. Ambedkar International Centre at Delhi’s Janpath on Tuesday. The meeting took place outside the Parliament House complex as repair works going on in the auditorium, where all party MPs meet.
The venue is notable since the centre is devoted to Dalit leader BR Ambedkar, whose death anniversary was celebrated on Monday.
Along with BJP president Jagat Prakash Nadda, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union ministers Amit Shah, Piyush Goyal, S Jaishankar, Pralhad Joshi, Jitendra Singh, and others attended the meeting.
The meeting takes place amid opposition parties’ numerous adjournments over the suspension of 12 members of Parliament (MPs). These leaders are demanding that their suspension be lifted. Due to the demonstrations, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned five times on Monday, with only 45 minutes of debate.
Six members of the Congress have been suspended, two each from the Trinamool Congress and the Shiv Sena, and one each from the CPI and the CPM: Congress’s Phulo Devi Netam, Chhaya Verma, Ripun Bora, Rajamani Patel, Syed Nasir Hussain, and Akhilesh Prasad Singh; Trinamool Congress’s Dola Sen and Shanta Chhetri; and Priyanka Chaturvedi and Anil Desai’s Priyanka Chaturvedi and Anil Desai’s Priyanka Chatur.
They were suspended for disturbing the peace during Parliament’s monsoon session in August. During the passage of the General Insurance Business (Nationalisation) Amendment Bill, 2021, opposition members stormed the Well of the House, prompting the summoning of marshals.
Since their suspension, all 12 MPs have made frequent visits to Parliament and have sat outside the Mahatma Gandhi statue.
