UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson Steps Down

Boris Johnson

According to BBC, The leadership polls are scheduled over the summer and the victor will replace Mr.Boris Johnson at the party’s yearly conference in early October.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday resigned after days of defections plunged the Conservative Party-led government into a deeper political turmoil.

In his address to the nation, Johnson said he will serve as the PM until a new leader is appointed.

Johnson also said he was immensely proud of his achievements. According to AP the decision to step down comes after one of his closest allies Treasury Chief Nadhim Zahawi suggested him to resign for the good of the UK.

“It is clearly the will of the parliamentary Conservative party that there should be a new leader of that party, and therefore a new prime minister,” Mr. Johnson added.

The English PM  outside 10 Downing Street further said, he was “sad… to be giving up the best job in the world” and justified fighting on in the final hours to deliver the mandate he won in a general election in December 2019.

According to BBC, The leadership polls are scheduled over the summer and the victor will replace Mr.Boris Johnson at the party’s yearly conference in early October.

In the frenzied hours building up to Mr.Johnson’s announcement, opposition Labour leader Keir Starmer had welcomed his impending departure.

“A proper change of government” was needed and demanded a no-confidence vote in parliament, potentially triggering a general election, rather than Mr. Johnson “clinging on for months and months”, Mr. Starmer said.

Even while eyeing the exit, Mr. Johnson on Thursday sought to steady the ship with several appointments to replace the departed members of the cabinet.

According to reports, there were cries of “bye, Boris” which echoed around the chamber at the end of his speech.

Rahul Gandhi Appears In Sultanpur Court For 2018 Defamation Case

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi appeared before Sultanpur Court on Tuesday regarding a 2018 defamation case while his ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ reached Amethi, his former Lok Sabha constituency. Jairam Ramesh, Congress General Secretary in Communications, mentioned that the yatra would briefly halt as the District Civil Court in Sultanpur had summoned Gandhi in a defamation case filed by a BJP leader in August 2018.

“Today marks the 38th day of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, starting at 2 pm from Fursantganj in Amethi district and heading towards Raebareli and Lucknow. This morning, @RahulGandhi will be at the District Civil Court in Sultanpur, summoned 36 hours earlier to appear regarding a defamation case filed by a BJP leader in August 2018,” Ramesh posted.

He emphasized that the yatra would continue despite the summons, affirming Gandhi’s determination and the Congress party’s resilience.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Smriti Irani challenged Rahul Gandhi on Monday to contest Amethi alone in the Lok Sabha elections. Irani asserted that Gandhi was met with deserted streets upon his arrival in Amethi as part of his yatra. She recalled her victory over Gandhi in the 2019 elections, highlighting his diminished influence in the constituency.

“Rahul Gandhi considered Amethi as the centre of power but did not provide service, which is why Amethi’s deserted streets welcomed him. Congress workers who welcomed Rahul Gandhi did not participate in his yatra, so the Congress had to call workers from Sultanpur and Pratapgarh,” Irani remarked.

The political exchange between Irani and Gandhi underscores the ongoing rivalry between the BJP and Congress in Uttar Pradesh. Despite Gandhi’s legal obligations and political challenges, his determination to continue the yatra signifies his commitment to connect with voters and address socio-political issues across the country.
