California: 6 Bodies Discovered At Mojave Desert Crossroads

Deputies discovered six dead bodies at an isolated dirt crossroads in the Mojave Desert; the scene was reported as so graphic that TV stations in Southern California censored parts of the photos taken by their helicopters while they were flying overhead.

Around 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s officers discovered five of the bodies after arriving at the scene off Highway 395 outside the El Mirage town in response to a request for a welfare check. Sheriff Mara Rodriguez, a spokesman, reported that the sixth was discovered early on Wednesday.

Rodriguez stated that investigators could not even identify how the victims died or whether they had been shot because they were still assembling evidence to figure out what had transpired. The area is so remote that the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department requested assistance from the California Highway Patrol’s Aviation Division to locate the incident. According to Rodriguez, it is roughly 20 miles (32 kilometres) northwest of Victorville and 50 miles (80 kilometres) northeast of Los Angeles.

According to TV reporters who arrived on Tuesday night, two cars were spotted at the crime scene. TV stations’ overhead footage featured a dark blue SUV with a blown-out passenger window and another door open, although with some blurry parts.

The camera showed kilometres of scrubby desert territory with several yellow evidence markers close to the dirt crossroads. The nearest paved road was restricted from access by yellow tape. According to an email from the sheriff’s spokesperson Gloria Huerta, the department’s specialised investigations division was called in to investigate a murder.
