Harmony Foundation’s founder-chairman Dr Abraham Mathai has written to Mr. António Guterres, the Secretary-General of United Nations, over Expulsion of the Mother Teresa nuns from Nicaragua. Dr Mathai said the move is a blot on humanity and shocks the world.
“I am greatly pained to bring to the urgent attention of the United Nations, the matter of the expulsion of the Mother Teresa nuns from Nicaragua, following the forced closure of the Missionaries of Charity in the country last month,” Dr Mathai said in his letter.
Hitting out at Daniel Ortega, the President of Nicaragua, Dr Mathai wrote: “It is absolutely absurd and ridiculous for Dan iel Ortega a paranoid and maniacal dictator to make false and unsubstantiated allegations, that nongovernmental groups such as the Missionaries of Charity, are working on behalf of foreign interests to destabilize his government.”
“Ortega’s irrational act o f blatantly wiping out organizations it doesn’t control, is in itself a dictatorial act, further violating the rights of the citizens which in highly amounts to gross injustice. The autocratic rule of this megalomaniacal dictator since 2007 is itself a gros s violation of human and civil rights. Hence the expulsion of the of the Missionaries of Charity from Nicaragua where they’ve served for over three decades only compounds it.”
Highlighting the work of Missionaries For Charity, Dr Mathai said the group, which is dedicated to helping the most marginalized people in such an impoverished nation, has been in Nicaragua for over three decades, operating a children’s centre, a home for girls, a facility for the elderly and a vocational training for child victims of violence.
Calling the expulsion of nuns as thoughtless and inhumane move, Dr Mathai said Ortega’s “dictatorial regime” openly violates human rights.
“The legacy of Mother Teresa which continues to live on through the transforming and compassionate work of Missionar ies of Charity which she founded, based on her ethos and virtues, exemplified by the nuns, has been terribly insulted by the obnoxious action of the paranoid dictator,” Dr Mathai said.
On behalf of Harmony foundation, the former Vice-chairman of Minorities Commision said he looks forward with anticipation that the United Nations will intervene accordingly by mobilising the international community to castigate and reprimand the unjustified action of the dictatorial regime of Daniel Ortega.
“The United Nations should consider such drastic measures like imposing sanctions on the regime of Ortega or even ostracise Nicaragua from the international community for applying draconian measures on humanitarian organisations who are working selflessly amongst the impoverished sections of the population,” Dr Mathai told the UN Chief.
“The world admires the Missionaries of Charity for their compassionate endeavours and their selfless deeds. In a world that is caught up in materialistic pursuits and gradual vanishing of humanity, it is these revered nuns who restore our faith in compassion and kindness through their altruistic persona. They give us the greatest amount of hope in these darkest times that the world is going through and therefore the United Nations should step in to ensure humanity and sanity survives,” Dr Mathai ended his letter admiring Missionaries of Charity.
