On Friday, Russian soldiers launched an armoured ground attack on Ukraine’s second city of Kharkiv in the country’s northeast, making small inroads and opening a new front in a long-running conflict in the east and south. According to the defence ministry, Ukraine despatched troops as the battle continued in the region’s border territories, and Russia bombarded the frontier town of Vovchansk with guided aircraft bombs and artillery.
