Meanwhile, Carney called former US President Donald Trump as a danger to Canadian independence
Mark Carney’s recent triumph, leading the Liberal Party in the Canadian federal elections has initiated a potential re-evaluation. This is about one of the nation’s most strained international relationships: that with India.
Carney, a newcomer to the political arena, previously remarked, ‘I am most effective in a crisis’. His election may herald an opportunity for enhanced bilateral relations between New Delhi and Ottawa. Relation between the two had deteriorated significantly during the tenure of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
“Congratulations @MarkJCarney on your election as the Prime Minister of Canada and to the Liberal Party on their victory. India and Canada are bound by shared democratic values, a steadfast commitment to the rule of law, and vibrant people-to-people ties. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our partnership and unlock greater opportunities for our people,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India wrote on X.
In his campaign, Mr. Carney emphasized the importance of restoring connections with India as a key objective.
As of 3:15 am (Ottawa time) on Tuesday, candidates from Mark Carney’s Liberal Party were either leading or secured victory. This was by 167 seats, surpassing the Conservative Party’s 145 seats.
Carney said, “What Canada will be looking to do is to diversify our trading relationships with like-minded countries, and there are opportunities to rebuild the relationship with India. There needs to be a shared sense of values around that commercial relationship, and if I am Prime Minister, I look forward to the opportunity to build that,”
He added, “It’s an incredibly important relationship, the Canada-India relationship, on many levels. On the personal level, with Canadians having deep personal ties, economically, strategically.”
The leader of the Liberal Party, who is an economist and has previously served as the governor of both the Bank of England and the Bank of Canada, indicated that he might seek to reestablish relations with New Delhi should he regain power, emphasizing the significance of the relationship with India as ‘extremely important.’
Meanwhile, Carney characterized former US President Donald Trump as a danger to Canadian independence. He famously asserted, “Donald Trump wants to break us so America can own us.” In light of this, he committed to broadening Canada’s trade connections, specifically identifying India as a crucial ally.
