Myanmar Surpasses Afghanistan As Top Global Opium Producer: UN

Myanmar surpassed Afghanistan as the world’s leading opium producer as of 2023, producing an estimated 1,080 metric tonnes, according to a UN report. This shift occurred after the Taliban’s crackdown on opium in Afghanistan, resulting in a 95% drop to approximately 330 tonnes. Myanmar’s opiate economy is now valued between $1 billion and $2.4 billion, constituting 1.7 to 4.1% of the country’s 2022 GDP, according to UNODC.

A woman linked to an alleged criminal network was arrested in connection with the murder of Karni Sena chief Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi. Nitin Fauji and Rohit Rathore, identified as shooters, along with accomplice Udham Singh, were apprehended in Chandigarh. Police revealed that Pooja Saini and her husband, Mahendra Meghwal, provided weapons to Fauji, who stayed in their Jaipur flat before the December 5 killing.
