New York City settled a $17.5 million lawsuit filed by two Muslim-American women who accused the police of violating their rights by demanding hijab removal for mugshots. The agreement, a preliminary class action settlement filed in Manhattan federal court, includes compensation for individuals compelled to remove religious attire before photography. Pending approval by US District Judge Analisa Torres, payouts, totaling approximately $13.1 million post-legal fees, may rise with claim submissions from over 3,600 eligible class members. Each recipient stands to receive between $7,824 and $13,125.
