The Munich Security Conference and India’s Role

At the recent Munich Security Conference, the central question was simple. Who can influence Russia to end the war in Ukraine?
India was present, but it was not the focus.
For the past few years, India followed what is now better described as multi alignment. We engaged the West, stayed connected to Russia, and kept our options open. Our leverage came from energy ties and the ability to speak to both sides.
That space is changing.
After pressure from the United States, India reduced its exposure to Russian energy. This strengthened ties with Washington, but it also altered perceptions about how independent our position is.
In Munich, attention shifted clearly toward the People’s Republic of China. Europe understands that China has deeper economic leverage over Russia. Beijing’s influence is structural and financial. India’s was political and communicative. In today’s environment, hard economic power appears to matter more.
At the same time, India is deepening trade and technology ties with the United States. Tariff reductions were openly linked to India diversifying away from Russian energy. This brings clear economic benefits. But it also raises a question. If trade gains are tied to foreign policy choices, is the partnership fully flexible?
Some argue India is not losing leverage, only reshaping it. Moving from oil diplomacy to chips and supply chains may be a strategic shift. That could strengthen us in the long term.
But multi alignment works only if real options remain open.
New Delhi’s challenge today is not about choosing between East and West. It is about ensuring that while building a deeper economic future with the West, it does not leave its space as an independent global voice empty. Because if that space opens up, Beijing will step into it.
