Kerala:In a literacy examination a 104- year old woman scored 89 percent

Kottayam: In a literary examination conducted by the literacy mission in Kottayam district of Kerala. Kuttyiamma an 104-year old with a flying color scored 89 marks out of hundred in the literacy examination. The States education minister V Sivankutty also took up to twitter and congratulated Kuttiyamma for her achievement.

The course Kuttiyamma attended was equivalent to primary education which was inclusive of Malayalam alphabets with basic mathematics and the mere knowledge of writing own address and name.When literacy mission volunteer M Rehna approached her two months, she grabbed the opportunity and appeared for the test with full enthusiasm and scored 89 percent.  

The Education Minister V Sivankutty tweeted in his twitter account that there is no barrier for entering the world of knowledge and wishing and encouraging new learners.

Kuttiyamma was a unfortunate woman who was never able to go to school although she could read well, writing was quite alien to her all these years, she surpassed it all and managed to score full marks in mathematics.

The tutor M Rehna who took classes for Kuttiyamma said that Kuttiyamma was a enthusiastic learner. “Her only condition was that the teacher should speak louder because she has a hearing issue. She attended classes at home in the morning and evening religiously,” said Rehna, the tutor added that she was moved by the centenarian’s desire to learn more.

The Education Minister V Sivankutty tweeted in his twitter account that there is no barrier for entering the world of knowledge and wishing and encouraging new learners.

Jiji Nagamattom, panchayat member and education standing committee chief, said that “She made our panchayat famous. She is a role model for many. We salute her enthusiasm and spirit,”

Interestingly Kottayam is known as a city of letters. It was declared the first 100 per cent literate city in the country in 1989.

The Kerala State literacy mission has been conducting classes and equivalent examinations for those who missed their opportunities to learn for many years. Its education centres under the local self-government institutions have empowered many like Kuttiyamma.
