MPs meet PM Modi to hold a discussion on the SC/ST atrocities act

It was on 20 March that the Supreme Court had diluted the stringent provisions that mandated immediate arrest under the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities (POA) Act.

A delegation of ST MPs and SC of NDA, led by the Union social justice minister Thawarchand Gehlot and the LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan, today met PM Modi so as to hold a discussion regarding the judgement of the apex court that dilutes the provisions of the SC-ST act.

Marking his comment on the meeting, Paswan told the media people, “It was a good and elaborate discussion with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Supreme Court judgement on the SC/ST atrocities act. Modi-ji listened to us and heard our concerns”.

It was on 20 March that the Supreme Court had diluted the stringent provisions that mandated immediate arrest under the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities (POA) Act.

It took cognizance of the widespread misapplication of the stringent Act against the government servants and stated that a public servant can only be detained once the appointing authority approves of it. Moreover, a non-public servant can be detained after it is approved by the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) which may be granted in suitable cases and if deemed necessary for certain reasons, can be recorded as well.

Recently Gehlot had written to Ravi Shankar Prasad, the law minister about a review plea filed against the verdict of the Supreme Court. Taking note that there were apprehensions that the order would render the law “ineffective” and impact the dispensation of the justice to tribals and Dalits adversely.
