12-Year-Old Dies After Walking 150 KMs To Return Back Home In Chattisgarh From Telangana

Jamlo Makdam, the victim, was a part of the migrant worker’s group working in the chilli fields of Kannaiguda village in Telangana, informed the officials.

Bijapur| A 12 years old girl from Bijapur of Chattisgarh state died of dehydration and exhaustion due to walking for over 150 kilometres to return to her home from Telangana where she had gone for work.

Jamlo Makdam, the victim, was a part of the migrant worker’s group working in the chilli fields of Kannaiguda village in Telangana, informed the officials.

Due to the lockdown imposed across the country and the unavailability of the transport services, the group decided to walk back towards their homes, nearly 150 KMs on foot.

Jamlo along with others reportedly started her journey on 15 April. She died on the morning of 18 April due to exhaustion near Bhandarpal village in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh.

“The distance between the place in Telangana where she worked and Bijapur is 150 kilometres and she died some 50 kilometres away from her native village. She had a meal on Saturday morning but then complained of stomach ache and uneasiness and died around 10 am,” BR Pujari, Bijapur Chief Medical and Health Officer, told to news agency PTI.

He also said that her samples have tested negative for coronavirus.

“Prima facie, it seems she died either due to electrolyte imbalance, exhaustion or dehydration,” he further added.

He also said that members of the group told them that the girl didn’t eat well which may have caused the fatigue.

Meanwhile, the state government has announced a compensation of 1 Lakh for the family of the deceased.

The migrants have been at the centre of innumerable problems since the lockdown has been imposed. After they were suddenly rendered jobless and couldn’t feed themselves or their families, they started walking back towards their villages. An exodus was seen on the Delhi-UP border when migrants gathered in thousands to return back home.
