197 Cases Filed, 37 Arrested In Maharashtra For Rumour-Mongering, Informs HM Deshmukh

Deshmukh said, “During the lockdown, some people on WhatsApp, Facebook, Messages or Twitter are spreading misinformation and rumours in the society.”

Mumbai| Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh today informed that 197 cases have been filed in Maharashtra since the lockdown for rumor-mongering or communal messages.

Deshmukh said, “During the lockdown, some people on WhatsApp, Facebook, Messages or Twitter are spreading misinformation and rumours in the society. In a similar manner, they are trying to create a drift between religions and communities through these mediums.”

Referring to these type of cases, Deshmukh informed, “Till now, we have filed 197 criminal cases for the same offences. We have also arrested 37 people for indulging in these types of acts.”

He further added, “I request citizens not to indulge in this type of rumour-mongering. I also ask them to co-operate with the state police.”

The similar type of message was given by the Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray in his briefing couple of days back.

“Like coronavirus, there is another virus that is emerging, which is threatening social harmony, the virus of fake news and communal hatred,” Uddhav Thackeray had said.

He had also warned that strict action will be taken against those who try to spread any kind of misinformation or hatred.
