20 Lakh Indian Accounts Blocked By WhatsApp: Company Reveals In First Compliance Report

WhatsApp clarified that more than 95% of such restrictions are due to unreasonable use of automated or bulk messaging (spam).

WhatsApp, a company owned by Facebook, has blocked 20 lakh Indian accounts with objectionable content till Thursday. The company has stated this in its first compliance (intermediary) report. Under the new IT Act, Intermediary companies are asked to furnish compliance report every month.

According to the company, 20 lakh accounts have been blocked in India between May 15 and June 15 this year, while it has received 345 complaints. WhatsApp is blocking or deactivating an average of around 8 million accounts worldwide every month. Google, COO, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and other social media companies have also submitted their compliance reports.

95% ban due to spam

The company clarified that more than 95% of such restrictions are due to unreasonable use of automated or bulk messaging (spam). WhatsApp said the number of blocked accounts has increased since 2019 as the company’s advanced system is helping to trace more such accounts.

It is mandatory to provide information under the new rules

Under the new information technology rules, it has been made mandatory for social media companies to submit this report. The new rules require compliance reports to be published every month for major digital platforms with more than 5 million users. In this report, it is important for such companies to mention the complaints they receive and the action taken against them.

The new IT minister had also given a warning

Earlier, IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had made a big statement amid controversy on Twitter over the new law. He had said that every company operating in India should abide by the laws of India.
