5 Arrested In Mysuru Gang-rape Case: Karnataka DGP

A 22-year-old MBA student from Maharashtra studying at a Mysuru university was allegedly gangraped and assaulted.

In connection with the gang-rape of a student in Mysuru and a vicious assault on her friend, five people have been arrested, Karnataka DGP Praveen Sood said on Saturday.

He said that a sixth accused is on the run and the police are working to hunt him down.

Mr Sood said that all five are labourers from Tamil Nadu’s Tiruppur district, adding that one of those arrested seemed to be a juvenile; “… a 17-year-old. We are not sure… we are verifying”.

The top cop, whose force was under the scanner for not making any arrest in this sensitive case since the Tuesday evening incident, also said, “It is a sensitive case. We have technical and scientific evidence.”

A 22-year-old MBA student from Maharashtra studying at a Mysuru university, along with her friend, were attacked at Chamundi Hills (a popular tourist spot on the outskirts of the city) late Tuesday evening.

A group of men, who were allegedly drinking and saw the couple enter the forest, followed them and demanded money. When they refused to pay, the men beat the young woman’s friend and two of the accused allegedly raped her and inflicted severe injuries.

This horror landed the two in hospital about six hours later.

This incident has triggered massive protests in Karnataka and across the country.

The Yuva Sena, youth wing of the ruling Shiv Sena in Maharashtra, on Saturday appealed to Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and Director-General of Police Praveen Sood to render help to an MBA student who was gang-raped in Mysuru.

The Yuva Sena Secretary Durga Bhosle-Shinde, Core Committee members Suprada Phatarpekar, Sheetal Sheth and Subhashini Thevar, in letters to the CM and DGP of the neighbouring state, expressed “deep anguish” over the incident on the 23-year-old MBA student of Mumbai.

“The victim’s condition is critical, as reported by media. An assault on a woman anywhere is an assault on humanity,” the Yuva Sena said, appealing for best medicare to her, besides urgent and strict action against the perpetrators.

“The police must treat this incident with the utmost urgency and take all relevant steps to arrest the accused as soon as possible. Any delay will make it even more difficult to ensure justice to the survivor.”
