The revered ad guru and theatre personality Alyque Padamsee passed away in Mumbai today. He was 90 years of age.
Padamsee was most known for the role he played in the 1982 historical drama “Gandhi” where he appeared as Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Being the head of Lintas India, he was recognized for building into one of the leading advertising agencies in the nation.
Widely known as the “Brand Father of Indian advertising”, Padamsee was mind behind several iconic Indian ad campaigns that include Cherry Charlie for Cherry Blossom Shoe Polish, Lalitaji for Surf, the MRF muscle man, the Liril Girl, Hamara Bajaj among many other widely known ads.
For his immense contributions to the creative field, he was adorned with Padmashri in the year 2000 and was titled as “Advertising Man of the Century” by The Advertising Club in Mumbai. He was also awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Tagore Ratna in the year 2012.

Padamsee was born in the year 1928 into a Khoja Muslim family from Gujarat. In the world of theatre, he was known for his productions like Tuglaq, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita.
