Bharat Bandh: The Anti-reservation protestors block a train in Bihar’s Arrah

A Bharat Bandh has been called by several Anti-reservation groups protesting the caste-based reservations in education and jobs.

Last week, several Dalit organizations observed Bharat Bandh and took it to streets to protest the recent amendments introduced by the Supreme Court in the SC/ST Act. This week, however, a Bharat Bandh is called by several Anti-reservation groups. The groups are protesting the caste-based reservations in education and jobs.

The Union Home Ministry issued an advisory ahead of the bandh and asked the security forces to keep the sensitive areas under tight patrolling. The ministry has also advised the states to mobilise adequate security measures to avoid violence.

Meanwhile, a curfew has been imposed in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhind. During the April 2 Bharat Bandh, several deaths were reported from MP as the protests turned violent. For the entire day, schools and colleges will remain shut in Gwalior, Bhind and Morena. Following the call for bandh, internet services have been suspended in UP’s Hapur while Section 144 has been imposed in Bharatpur. The Punjab and Haryana government too has increased the security. Prohibitory orders have been issued in Rajasthan’s Jaipur. In Bihar’s Arrah, the protestors blocked trains earlier this morning.

On the other hand, Dalit leader and Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani called the Supreme Court order “an act of inflicting judicial atrocity on Scheduled Castes and Tribes of the country”. He also demanded the Centre to bring an ordinance against the Supreme Court order before April 14, the birth Anniversary of Dr B R Ambedkar.
