Congress promises to give annual income of 72,000 to India’s 20% most poor families

New Delhi | In a major announcement before the release of its manifesto for the upcoming Lok Sabha election the Congress party today announced that it will provide Rs 72,000 under its minimum basic income guarantee scheme for India’s 20% most poor families.

Addressing a press conference, Gandhi said,” “If we come to power, 20 percent of the poorest families will be given Rs 72,000 every year directly into their bank accounts under the Minimum Income Guarantee scheme.” ” If you’re income is below the mark then we will help you get there. This will be a fiscally prudent scheme,” he added.

Calling it the world’s largest minimum income scheme the Congress president said, “5 crore families and 25 crore people will directly benefit from this scheme. All calculations have been done. We have spoken to economists. This is a ground-breaking idea. There is no such scheme anywhere else in the world.” He further added that the Congress Party wants to lift 25 crore people out of poverty. It is an extremely powerful, dynamic, well-thought through idea. We have done all our calculations and will be implementing it. Rahul Gandhi further termed the scheme as an final assault on poverty.
