New Delhi|| The deadly coronavirus has so far infected 8,356 people in India. The death toll remains at 273 on Sunday. The union health ministry gave the information adding that around 909 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, whereas 34 deaths were reported.

The new figures come a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a video conference with 13 Chief Ministers on Saturday to discuss whether the 21-day lockdown should be extended. The majority of CM stressed that the lockdown should be extended until 30th April.

Prime Minister Modi is likely to address the country on 14th March informing about the extension of lockdown. The 21-day lockdown had begun on 25th March.

This time around, the government is supposed to be more alert on the economical front and will try to salvage the economy while trying to contain the spread of the virus at the same time.

Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, and Telangana have already announced an extension of the 21-day lockdown. Bihar government in a letter to centre has shown no objection in extending the lockdown. However, the Bihar government wants rural construction and flood relief work to continue. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee also supported the PM’s decision to extend the lockdown.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal also took on twitter to express his willingness to extend the lockdown. He said, PM has taken correct decision to extend lockdown. Today, India’s position is better than many developed countries because we started lockdown early. If it is stopped now, all gains would be lost. To consolidate, it is imp to extend it.”

The Joint Secretary to Health Ministry, Lav Agarwal on Saturday, Said, “According to a statistical analysis by us, India would have registered a 41 per cent cumulative rise in the number of cases, taking the total to 2.08 lakh on April 11 and 8.2 lakh by April 15 had there been no lockdown or other containment measures.”
