Cyclone Fani: Mamata Banerjee, PM Modi cancels rallies

New Delhi | Amid the Cyclone Fani hitting the East coast of India, various political leaders have cancelled their election campaigns as the cyclonic storm continues to move northeast wards and weaken gradually over the Gangetic West Bengal.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has cancelled all her rallies for the next 48 hours as the cyclone is expected to hit West Bengal tonight.Banerjee will be in the coastal belt of Kharagpur to personally monitor the situation. She was scheduled to address a rally in Medinipur today.

Announcing about the cancellation of rallies on Twitter, Banerjee wrote,” Have cancelled my rallies for the next 48 hours because of what could be an impending disaster #CyclonicStormFANI We are monitoring the situation 24×7 and doing all it takes. I appeal to all people to cooperate. Be alert, take care and stay safe for the next two days.”


BJP president Amit Shah has also canceled all his 3 rallies in Jharkhand due to the inclement weather. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday chaired a high-level meeting to review the preparedness relating to Cyclone Fani.

The Airports Authority of India also announced that no flight will take off or land from Kolkata Airport from 3 pm today to 8 am tomorrow (IST). Closure timing revised from earlier announced 9.30 pm today to 6 pm tomorrow (IST). The NDRF team deployed at Digha evacuated total 132 people, including 52 children, from Dattapur and Tajpur in West Bengal.

Extremely severe cyclonic storm ‘Fani’ made a landfall in Puri on Odisha coast on Friday morning, triggering heavy rainfall coupled with high velocity winds with speed of 175 kmph in vast areas.

Large areas in the seaside pilgrim town of Puri and other places were submerged with water as heavy rains battered the entire coastal belt of the state. Several trees were uprooted and thatched structures destroyed at some places including Bhubaneswar.
