The Curve Goes Up: India Records 3.79 Lakh Covid Cases, 3,645 Deaths

For over a week now, India has been recording over three lakh cases every day. Since April 15, more than 2 lakh cases a day are being recorded.

Hitting a new daily high today, India recorded 3,79,257 fresh infections and 3,645 deaths in the last 24 hours. The total caseload has risen to 1.83 crore cases; over 2.04 lakh people have died so far. The second wave of the pandemic has hit the country hard, with hospitals overwhelmed with incoming patients.

For over a week now, India has been recording over three lakh cases every day. Since April 15, more than 2 lakh cases a day are being recorded. The shortage of hospital beds, medical oxygen and crucial anti-viral drugs has worsened the crisis.

All adults can get Covid vaccine shots from Saturday as the government liberalises the vaccine drive to fight the virus. Over 1.3 crore people on Wednesday applied for vaccination on CoWIN, the government’s registration website. The registration process worked fine after a few initial glitches.

Many countries including the US, UK, Russia and China are sending help to India amid the crisis. US Secretary of Defense Lloyd J Austin III, in a tweet, said: “We’re committed to use every resource at our disposal, within our authority, to support India’s frontline healthcare workers.”

China’s Ambassador to India Sun Weidong on Wednesday said in a tweet: “Chinese medical suppliers are working overtime on orders from India, at least 25,000 orders for oxygen concentrators in recent days. Cargo planes are under plan for medical supplies. Chinese customs will facilitate relevant process.”

The worst-hit state across the country, Maharashtra reported a record 985 Covid deaths. The state also reported 63,309 new cases – a five per cent drop from yesterday. The total actives cases in Maharashtra stand at 6.73 lakh.

Kerala recorded more than 35,000 new Covid cases while Uttar Pradesh recorded over 29,000 cases. Even as Delhi remains under a curfew for the second consecutive week, the city recorded 25,986 cases.
