DMK Kanimozhi detained after opposition protest against Thoothukudi police firing

Chennai: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP Kanimozhi on Friday was detained after the opposition parties led by DMK held a protest against police firing during the anti-Sterlite protest in Thoothukudi.

The opposition parties had called a state-wide shutdown after 13 people died in a police firing when their protest against the construction of a new smelter by the Sterlite Copper turned violent.

“Edappadi K. Palaniswami-led government has become “bloodthirsty” and the chief minister should be held responsible for the incident,” Kanimozhi told the reporters.

“The CEO of Sterlite has said that they will not shut down. Today, people are dying there, but the government has done nothing,” she added.

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol. Thirumavalavan has also been detained along with Kanimozhi.

The administration has imposed section 144 in Thoothukudi while the internet services have also been temporarily shut down for the next five days.
