Panaji: Former Goa Minister Rohan Khaunte on Thursday said that he would join BJP. The statement came a day after the former minister resigned his position as an MLA.
Mr. Khaunte, who quit as an independent MLA from the Porvorim Assembly constituency, said in a statement, “I have decided to join the BJP to ensure the continuity of Porvorim’s development as well as to imbibe a culture of inclusiveness and togetherness. I will be joining BJP on Friday at Mahalaxmi temple in Panaji at 10 am.”
Today, I have tendered my resignation as a Member of Goa Legislative Assembly to the Hon’ble Speaker.

Earlier, Assembly Speaker Rajesh Patnekar met Rohan Khaunte to tender his resignation as an MLA
Rohan Kaunte had represented the Porvorim assembly segment two times as an Independent. With Khaunte’s resignation, Goa House’s strength is now reduced to 36 from 40. Earlier, Congress MLAs Ravi Naik, Luizinho Faleiro, and Goa Forward Party MLA Jayesh Salgaonkar had resigned in the run-up to the polls.
Earlier on Tuesday Khaunte also had a strong meeting with his strong oppositions before resigning to join with BJP.
Meanwhile, BJP North Goa district president Mahanand Asnodkar said Khaunte joining BJP will hurt the party’s prospects in the upcoming elections.
Asondkar said that Khaunte’s entry will also hurt the Bahujan Samaj not only in Porivoram but across the state.
