GHMC Election Results: BJP Takes Early Lead In 55 Seats

In the 2016 GHMC election, TRS won 99 wards out of 150 wards while AIMIM won 44 wards. BJP could win only 3 and Congress in 2 wards.

 

Hyderabad| The counting of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) election is going on. Among the early trends so far, BJP was ahead in 55 seats and ruling Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) in 21 seats. Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) is leading in 8 and Congress in 4 seats. Voting took place on 1 December.

There are 1,122 candidates in the fray for 150 wards of GHMC. Municipal corporation elections are considered to be very special this time, because the BJP had given its full strength in the elections.

BJP got 3 seats in 2016

In the 2016 GHMC election, TRS won 99 wards out of 150 wards while AIMIM won 44 wards. BJP could win only 3 and Congress in 2 wards. The Corporation of Greater Hyderabad and Old Hyderabad was swept by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) and Owaisi.

Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Hyderabad on 29 November. He went to the temple and did a road show in Secunderabad.

Less than 50% voter turnout

This time the GHMC election saw 46.55% voter turnout. In 2009, 42.04% voter turnout was recorded while in the 2016 election, 45.29% people voted. While voter turnout figure increased this time, it is still far below 50% mark.

24 assembly, 5 Lok Sabha seats in GHMC

GHMC is one of the largest municipal corporations in the country. This municipal corporation is in 4 districts, including Hyderabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Rangareddy and Sangareddy. The entire region comprises 24 assembly constituencies, while Telangana has 5 Lok Sabha seats. This is the reason that GHMC is at stake in the elections for KCR to BJP, Congress and Owaisi.
