Gujarat To Become First State To Start Clinical & Pathological Autopsies Of Deceased Covid-19 Patients

For such autopsies in Gujarat, senior doctors from B J Medical college of Ahmedabad have been given the responsibility to set up guidelines.

Gujarat is all set to become the first state across the country to begin research into pathology and disease progression of coronavirus patients. Deputy CM Nitin Patel, who also leads the state’s high power research committee, has commissioned senior doctors to form standard operating procedures (SOPs) and precautionary measures. He has also asked them to send a list of infrastructural facilities required to initiate clinical and pathological autopsies of the deceased patients due to Covid-19.

For such autopsies in Gujarat, senior doctors from B J Medical college of Ahmedabad have been given the responsibility to set up guidelines. In an interview with Ahmedabad Mirror, Dr. Hansa Goswami, HoD of Pathology dept in BJ Medical College, said, “We have been asked to prepare SOPs and be ready to carry out autopsies of Covid-19 patients which have not been carried out in Gujarat so far. We are preparing the guidelines now.”

The first week of May was deadliest for the state of Gujarat since half of all the deaths due to Covid-19 in the state took place from 1 to 7 May. Of the 425 deaths that were reported till 7 May in the state, 211 came during the first week of this month. Gujarat has been reporting second-highest death numbers after Maharashtra in Covid-19 crisis.
