Mumbai | The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has given a forecast of intermittent rain and shower, with very heavy rainfall at isolated places in city and suburbs.
Rainfall warnings for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad are red coded. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall, more than 20 cm is expected in these areas in next 24 hours, says IMD’s Deputy Director-General K.S. Hosalikar.
With heavy rains pounding Mumbai and its suburbs, the weather department on Wednesday issued a ‘red alert’ for the city and adjoining areas and asked the authorities to be prepared to handle any situation.
Mumbai residents have been asked to call 1916 for any assistance. Overnight rains have also resulted in waterlogging and traffic disruption in Sion, Parel, King’s Circle, Dadar and Byculla.
As a precautionary measure in the wake of the IMD’s warning, schools have been asked to remain closed today. “The principals of the schools where students are already in are requested to take all precautions and ensure that the children are sent back home carefully and safely,” said an official from the BrihanmumbaiMunicipal Corporation.
The civic body has also asked people to avoid venturing near the sea or walking in waterlogged areas.
BMC has issued a warning for citizens to stay indoors.
Considering IMD’s heavy rainfall warning, we request Mumbaikars to stay indoors in safe premises till the water in low lying areas recedes. Please call us on 1916 or tweet to us for updates. #MumbaiRain #mumbairainliveupdates #MCGMUpdates
