In New Record High, India Sees 2.73 Lakh Fresh Covid Cases With 1,619 Deaths

For the fifth straight day now, India has been reporting over 2 lakh cases of Covid-19 infection.

Struggling to control the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, India recorded 2,73,810 fresh infections and 1,619 deaths in new record high, taking the caseload to 1.5 crore. Over 1.78 lakh people have succumbed to the deadly virus till now. For the fifth straight day now, India has been reporting over 2 lakh cases of Covid-19 infection.

On Sunday, the centre informed that it has increased the supply of medical oxygen to 12 “high-burden states”, including Maharashtra, which has the highest caseload in the country. Heart-wrenching scenes have been coming to fore from across the country where people have been suffering and running pillar to post to get medical oxygen for their loved ones.

The centre also said on Sunday that the supply of oxygen meant for industries will also be diverted for medical use in the country. Railways is also planning to run Oxygen Express Trains via Green Corridors to give a boost to the fight against Covid.

In the last 24 hours, Maharashtra, Delhi and Karnataka recorded the highest daily surge. Maharashtra logged 68,631 infections, Delhi reported 25,462 new cases while Karnataka saw a spike of 19,067 cases. Karnataka capital Bengaluru also saw highest daily surge with 12,793 cases.

Fresh restrictions have been announced in Bihar, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Manipur. Till May 15 in Bihar, apart from 9 pm-5 am night curfew, malls, schools, cinema halls and places of worship have been shut.

Tamilnadu, from Tuesday between 10 pm and 4 am, has announced a night curfew. Beaches, parks have been temporarily shut and inter-state movement of buses has been restricted.

As a part of “anushasan pakhwada” or “self-discipline fortnight”, restrictions will be imposed in Rajasthan from today till May 3. Along with ban on large gatherings, Manipur will also observe a 7 pm- 5 am night curfew.

After a meeting between Arvind Kejriwal and Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, weekend curfew is likely to be extended in Delhi. The Delhi CM on Sunday also red-flagged shortage of medical oxygen in state amid Covid surge.

“Del facing acute shortage of oxygen. In view of sharply increasing cases, Del needs much more than normal supply. Rather than increasing supply, our normal supply has been sharply reduced and Delhi’s quota has been diverted to other states,” Mr Kejriwal wrote in a tweet.
