Indore Court Rejects Stand-Up Comic Munawar Faruqui’s Bail Plea

Vimal Kumar Mishra, the government lawyer, said the state told the court that a similar case was lodged against Faruqui in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj.

On Tuesday, a court in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore rejected bail applications of Munawar Faruqui and four other stand-up comedians arrested on January 1 for allegedly insulting Hindu Gods and violating Covid-19 protocol at a New Year event.

Vimal Kumar Mishra, the government lawyer, said the state told the court that a similar case was lodged against Faruqui in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj. “The court rejected the bail applications of the comedians given the seriousness of the case,” said Mishra, as per HT report.

During a New Year show in Indore, a Mumbai-based standup comedian, along with four other event organisers, were arrested for allegedly insulting religious beliefs and also Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Indore-based Prakhar Vyas, Priyam Vyas, Nalin Yadav, and event coordinator Edwin Anthony were held along with Faruqui.

Based on a complaint by Eklavya Gaur, convenor of the Hind Rakshak Sangathan and son of BJP MLA Malini Gaur, the case was filed against comedian and four others.

The five have been charged under IPC sections 188, 269, 34 and 295A for organising the event sans permission, flouting COVID-19 safety norms, and hurting religious sentiments.
