Kerala Rains: 18 dead due to heavy rains and landslides

Thiruvananthapuram | With heavy rains showers resulting in flash floods and landslides around 20 people have died in various district of Kerala since last 24 hours.

According to reports, 10 people died in Idduki district due to landslides, 5 in Mallapuram, 2 in Kannur and 1 in Wayanad district. The administration in these districts has asked for army’s help to tackle the increasing flood problems. Three teams of NDRF have been deployed at Kozhikode, Ernakulam and Alappuzha districts along with Army, Navy, Police and Fire Force are active for the rescue efforts

State revenue minister E.Chandrasekharan has called for an emergency meeting of key officials to get a report of the problem and launch relief measures. State education Minister C Raveendranath has ordered for postponing higher secondary improvement exams scheduled for Thursday. Also, Educational institutions have declared a holiday in Idukki, Kollam and some other districts due to the rains.

A seven-member team of officials deputed by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to assess the flood situation in Kuttanand region is also scheduled to meet Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday.
