The BJP workers were marching towards Nabanna when the clashes broke out. The West Bengal police, in an attempt to stop the march, reportedly resorted to lathi-charge and used tear gas, water cannon on BJP workers at Howrah’s Santragachi.

Outside Nabanna, the West Bengal Secretariat in Howrah district, a protest rally organised by the youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) turned violent when protesters tried to break police barricades and forces retaliated with lathi-charge and tear gas, Hindustan Times reported.

“Police is lathi charging our people. Stone-pelting is being done from the Khidirpur side. Can’t the police see that?” Locket Chatterjee, the BJP leader said.

In protest of the alleged killing of party workers in West Bengal, the BJP’s youth wing had launched  ‘Nabanna Chalo’ agitation. The BJP workers were marching towards Nabanna when the clashes broke out. The West Bengal police, in an attempt to stop the march, reportedly resorted to lathi-charge and used tear gas, water cannon on BJP workers at Howrah’s Santragachi.

The police were deployed outside the BJP Headquarters in Kolkata since morning. BJP workers, in response,  raised slogans against the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government.

“We are protesting democratically, but Mamata Ji has tried to turn our peaceful demonstration into a violent protest. Goons along with police pelted stones at us,” said Kailash Vijayvargiya, who had participated in the protest.

When asked whether BJP workers were wearing masks as a precaution against Covid-19, Vijayvargiya said that all workers were wearing masks, but do the same rules not apply to Mamata Banerjee when she holds demonstrations?

“All workers are wearing masks. Are rules only for us? Mamata Ji holds demonstrations with thousands, & we’re being taught lessons of social distancing. Do the same rules not apply to her?” he asked.
